![]() ![]() My maternal grandparents were from the south (West Virginia and North Carolina) and while Granny didn't do a lot of baking by the time I came around - her health wasn't great - I hear her echoed throughout the pages of this cookbook. So long as it's from The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook. Regardless, after reading this cookbook I'm itching to bake something. It's the beginning of September here in Ohio and temps are in the mid-80s. (ARC copy generously provided by NetGalley) I consider it to be a very valuable addition to my ever-growing cookbook collection, and I really look forward to trying more recipes. ![]() I've only had the book for a few weeks, and it's already getting a good workout. In the other chapters, I've also made Pecan-Chocolate-Espresso Coffee Cake, and Cinnamon-Sour Cream Coffee Cake. I've made the Blueberry Muffins and Cinnamon-Sugar Doughnut Muffins and can't wait to try more recipes this chapter also includes recipes for Baked Eggs, Homemade Jam, Buttermilk Cornmeal Pancakes, and Hot Chocolate Mix. So far, my favorite chapter is probably the Breakfast chapter, because I really enjoy making breakfast treats. The book is nicely complemented with photos of many of the recipes (just about every other recipe or so includes a photo.) Many of these photos make the recipes look oh so tempting, especially the ones for the S'more Pie, Coconut Cake, and Cinnamon Sticky Buns. The book finishes with a Resources section, Acknowledgments, and an Index. The book features a Foreword by Paula Deen, an Introduction, The Method to the Magic (info on the science and operational details of baking), The Baker's Tool Kit (suggested tools every baker should have/what Cheryl and Griff can't live without), and A Peek Inside Our Spice Cabinet (a listing of the spices used in the cookbook's recipes.) Then the book is divided into 9 chapters: Breakfast Coffee Cakes, Quick Breads, and Sweet Yeast Breads Cupcakes and Cakes Pies, Cobblers, Crisps, and Tarts Puddings and Custards Cookies Brownies and Bars Confections Savories. The bakery was founded in 2002, and I sincerely hope to visit it some day. The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbooks has more than 100 recipes from Cheryl Day and Griffith Day, owners of the Back in the Day Bakery in Savannah, GA. I consider myself to be in the latter category, and I found this cookbook to have so many recipes I wanted to try, I did not know where to start. This is a really awesome cookbook both for newbie bakers as well as seasoned bakers. I cannot wait to try them out! Bakers: Find this book! ![]() Then, you get to the good stuff: Recipes! Chapters range from "Breakfast" to "Puddings and Custards" to "Brownies and Bars" to "Savories." I made copies of the recipes I must try - Rustic Peach-Blueberry Tart, Ginger Cake Squares, and Ham and Cheese Pastry Puffs, for example. Other sections, like "A Peek Inside Our Spice Cabinet," function as honest-to-goodness helpful primers. A breath of fresh air - and great reminders. (The photos are lovely and charming as well.) Before those, however, you find some super-useful sections, like "The Method to the Magic," which explains in plain and simple prose why such things as ingredient temperature, mis en place, understanding the function of each ingredient in a recipe, and (this one has my name all over it) reading the recipe all-the-way-through are so important to successful cooking. Then, I delved into the book, and what fun and functional recipes I found inside. The photo of Cheryl and Griffith Day in their bakery, called Back in the Day Bakery, in Savannah, Georgia, on the cover drew me in - big smiles and lots of character, not to mention some old timey charm. I discovered this book sitting on the New bookshelf. Celebrating family traditions, scratch baking, and quality ingredients, The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook is like a down-home bake sale in a book. Irresistible full-color photographs of food and behind-the-scenes bakery shots will give readers a glimpse into the sweet daily life at the bakeshop. It’s packed with Cheryl and Griff’s baking know-how plus recipes for their famous Buttermilk Biscones, Old-Fashioned Cupcakes, Chocolate Bread, Cinnamon Sticky Buns, S’more Pie, Almond Crunchies, Drunk Blondies, Pinkies Chocolate Lunch-Box Treats, Rustic Cheddar Pecan Rounds, and much more. To celebrate the bakery’s tenth anniversary, this duo has written a book filled with customers’ favorite recipes. As Paula Deen says in her foreword, Cheryl and Griff Day “bake decadent treats, but they also bake wonderful memories that stay with you forever.” Nationally recognized and locally adored for its decadent homespun desserts and delicious rustic breads, Back in the Day Bakery is a Savannah landmark. ![]()
